How to understand the ranking mechanism that defines a college

While searching for any of the best colleges in Navi Mumbaipeople often look at the institution’s ranking. While it is an easy way to understand if your choice of institution is really one of the top colleges in Mumbai, it is an obsession that should be done away with at the earliest. The best indicator of a university should be based on how education impacts society and its students. Yet this obsession with adding a list of ranked colleges is exasperating at best.

The problem area

The main problem through such a ranking system that defines the top colleges in Mumbai is that the lower-ranked universities lose out on many aspects. Some of the lower-ranked universities may be at the bottom as they offer lesser courses and not due to quality. The best colleges in Navi Mumbai, like Amity, often collaborate with other top-ranked universities in the world while the less fortunate colleges further sink due to the ranking stigma. National, as well as international ranking organizations, also force universities to change their core mission at times, which goes against their grain of thought.

The national ranking system

The NIRF under the Ministry of Human Resource Development defines institutes’ ranking in India. Any of the best colleges in Navi Mumbai and the top colleges in Mumbai are ranked on different performance parameters. These parameters are based on teaching, research, learning and resources, outreach and inclusivity, professional practice, graduation outcome, and perception. Each parameter is provided a mark, and the rankings are released as per categories. The nine categories studied are overall score, universities, colleges, management, engineering, medical, pharmacy, architecture, and law.

The flaw in the system

While the Indian universities present as the top colleges in Mumbai may rank well under the NIRF, they score dismally in the international rankings. This low ranking is due to perception, which is mainly dependent upon the expectancies and memories of people regarding any of the best colleges in Navi Mumbai. Perception is not a quantifiable parameter but is a major component of these ranking processes. It leads to inaccurate and biased conclusions that mostly ignore the real progress an institution may have undergone in the last financial year.
